In the midst of the chaos that enveloped Europe during World War II, a particular event stands out due to its sheer devastation and impact on civilian life. In February 1945, a massive bombing raid lasted three days and nights, leading to the complete destruction of a city’s center. This relentless attack left the residents, including one narrator, taking refuge in their basements, clinging to hope amidst the ruins.

The narrator recalls the moment when their mother urgently called for them to seek shelter: “Bombenangriff Fliegeralarm kommt mal rein,” highlighting the constant threat of air raids. For three days and nights, families huddled in basements, waiting for the storm to pass. When the war finally ended in 1945, there was a palpable sense of relief that Hitler was no longer alive and the fighting had ceased. Those who did not align with the Nazi ideology were particularly grateful for the war’s end.

Despite the devastation, life slowly began to resume. The narrator vividly remembers the city’s shattered state but also recounts attending a school in Tempelhof that was only partially destroyed. The school lacked a roof, and parts of the upper floors were missing, yet classes continued. The narrator notes that classes were only canceled when it rained, a situation that children found amusing.
