Each year, approximately 7,000 interns contribute around 2.8 million hours to the preservation of national parks. This remarkable dedication is matched by numerous volunteers, all working to maintain the parks, conduct research, and educate the public about America’s shared history.
A Celebration of Tradition and Service
Chuck Sams, the National Park Service Director, spoke of the timeless tradition of the Christmas tree lighting and acknowledged the contributions of park service employees, interns, and volunteers. He expressed gratitude to the National Park Foundation and its outgoing and incoming presidents for their support. Sams also reflected on his personal experience in the military, noting the sacrifices made by service members who often spend holidays away from loved ones.

President Joe Biden, unable to attend due to international commitments, extended his best wishes via video message. The ceremony was hosted by Grammy-nominated country music artist Mickey Guyton, who expressed gratitude to military families for their service and sacrifice.
