In a significant announcement from North Korea, the nation mourns the loss of Kim Yong Nam, a long-serving ceremonial figurehead. His passing marks the end of an era for the country, as he was a prominent figure in the North Korean political landscape.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Tuesday that Kim Yong Nam, who served as the president of the presidium of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly, died on Monday at the age of 97. His role, often viewed as a nominal head of state, was primarily symbolic, with the true authority being held by the ruling Kim family since 1948.

Following his death, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un paid his respects by visiting Kim Yong Nam’s bier on Tuesday, offering “deep condolences” over the loss of a pivotal figure in the country’s political history. Kim Yong Nam had a long tenure as the head of the Supreme People’s Assembly, holding the position from 1998 until April 2019, overseeing numerous state affairs during his time in office.
