At Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, we are reminded that we belong to God and to one another. This past Sunday’s sermon beautifully illustrated this communal bond through the story of a young boy’s simple yet profound offering, urging us to reflect on the abundance that can be found in sharing what we have, both tangible and intangible.

The sermon drew from the familiar biblical account in John 6:1-15, where Jesus feeds 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. It encouraged the congregation to look beyond the miracle of multiplication to the deeper transformation of hearts and communities. “The miracle of this passage for me is about the transformation of a people through the gifts of a little boy who gave all that he had,” the pastor reflected, emphasizing that the real miracle lies in the shared experience and the abundance that comes from collective generosity.

In a modern retelling, the pastor shared a story about a flight attendant who, faced with a plane full of hungry passengers and no food, invited everyone to contribute what they had. This gesture turned a moment of scarcity into one of abundance, mirroring the biblical narrative and highlighting the power of community.

The sermon also served as a call to action, particularly in the context of stewardship. The congregation was reminded of the importance of contributing to the church’s mission, not just financially but with their talents and gifts. “When the basket comes to us, we can’t be like folks on the flight going, ‘Actually, you can skip me.’ We all have something to put in the basket,” the pastor urged, challenging everyone to examine their own contributions and the potential impact they can make.

At its core, the message was one of hope and trust in God’s provision. It encouraged the community to listen to the “little voice” within, the one that believes in possibility and abundance, even when circumstances seem dire. This message resonated deeply as it aligned with the church’s mission to live like we belong to one another, fostering a spirit of generosity and shared purpose.

As the sermon concluded, the congregation was invited to reflect on their own contributions and how they might embody the spirit of the young boy in the scripture, offering all they have to the community and to God. The pastor left them with a poignant reminder: “What will you and what will we put in the basket?”
