Highland Park Presbyterian Church, a vibrant community nestled in the heart of our city, recently hosted a baptism Sunday that was filled with joy and celebration. The sermon, drawing from the powerful story of Joshua in the Old Testament, reminded all present of the incredible ways God works in our lives, even when faced with the impossible.

The church was bustling with energy as members and newcomers alike gathered to witness the baptism of several children and adults. Janie Bell, the Director of Women’s Ministry, warmly welcomed everyone back after the summer break, emphasizing the church’s commitment to community and spiritual growth. She highlighted the various ways members can connect through community groups, Bible studies, and prayer opportunities, inviting everyone to dive deeper into their faith journey.

The Essence of Worship

As the congregation stood together, the words of Psalm 34 set the tone for worship: “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.” This call to worship was a reminder of the central purpose of gathering: to honor God and acknowledge His works in our lives.

Baptism: A Celebration of Faith

The highlight of the service was the baptism ceremony, described by the pastor as one of the most beautiful depictions of the Gospel. The pastor reminded the congregation that “there’s really one true baptism, and that is the baptism of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” The baptism of children and adults alike was not just a declaration of their faith but a celebration of Jesus’s unwavering hold on them.

Chassen, a new mother, shared her journey of coming to faith after having her children, marking her baptism as the beginning of a new season of deeper trust and dependence on God. The pastor asked her, “Trusting in the Great gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?” Her affirmative response was met with the congregation’s support and prayers.

The Impossible Made Possible

The sermon took the congregation on a journey through Joshua 10:7-14, where Joshua, faced with an overwhelming battle, prayed for the sun to stand still to gain victory over his enemies. This bold prayer was a testament to Joshua’s faith in God’s power to do the impossible.

The pastor explained that God often fights battles for us in advance, battles we may not even be aware of in our current moment. “We serve a God who fights a battle for us in advance that we don’t even know that we are fighting in our current present moment,” he emphasized, drawing parallels to the challenges faced in modern life, where faith can often become monotonous and routine.

Practical Applications

The message resonated with many, encouraging them to trust in God’s ability to handle the seemingly impossible situations in their lives. The call to action was clear: to invite God into the gaps of our faith, to trust Him to handle our struggles, and to remember that He is faithful to His character.

As the service concluded, the pastor led the congregation in the Apostle’s Creed, a declaration of faith that united everyone present. With a benediction drawn from Joshua 1:9, the message was clear: “Do not be afraid; be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Highland Park Presbyterian Church continues to be a beacon of hope and faith, reminding its members that with God, nothing is impossible. For those looking to connect and grow in their spiritual journey, the church offers numerous opportunities to engage and build a community grounded in love and faith.
