A Celebration of Resurrection
The call to worship was inspired by Matthew 28, where the angel tells the women at Jesus’ tomb, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen…” This scripture reminds us of the hope and life that comes with celebrating a risen King. The congregation was encouraged to praise the Lord for His worth and the gift of life He provides.
The Power of the Gospel
The sermon, delivered by one of the pastors, focused on the power and essence of the Gospel as outlined in the Book of Romans. Referred to as the “Christian Masterpiece,” Romans is considered a comprehensive summary of Christian doctrine. The sermon highlighted how Romans has transformed lives, including notable figures like Martin Luther and John Wesley, and is often called the “Constitution of Christianity.”
Paul’s letter to the Romans emphasizes that the Gospel is for everyone, transcending all cultural and social barriers. The pastor explained that the Gospel is simply the good news of Jesus Christ, who came to Earth to rescue God’s people and will return to establish His kingdom. This message is a call for Christians to live under the lordship of Jesus, sharing the Gospel with others and partnering with God to establish His kingdom on Earth.
Breaking Free from Shame
One of the key themes addressed was the concept of shame and how the Gospel has the power to reverse it. The pastor shared a personal anecdote from his childhood in South Korea, illustrating the impact of shame-based cultures. However, he emphasized that the Gospel of Jesus frees us from the chains of shame and sin, offering us a new identity in Christ.
Paul’s declaration, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel,” serves as a powerful reminder that through Jesus, we can find freedom and salvation. The sermon encouraged the congregation to examine the “competing gospels” in their lives—those things that promise fulfillment but ultimately disappoint—and to place their trust fully in Jesus.
A Call to Action
As the service drew to a close, the congregation was invited to engage in a time of prayer, reflecting on the burdens and shame they might be carrying. The pastor urged everyone to imagine Jesus standing before them, ready to take on their burdens and offer His love and grace.
