The recent Mission Assurance inquiry has shed light on critical lapses in protocol that nearly resulted in a tragic assassination attempt. This investigation meticulously examined the events leading up to the incident, revealing significant deficiencies in four key areas: communications, protective advance processes, command and control processes, and coordination with external entities.
The inquiry highlighted failures among multiple employees, necessitating disciplinary actions. The preparation for the visit to the Butler Farm Show fell alarmingly short of the agency’s expected standards. “Let me be clear, there will be accountability, and that accountability is occurring,” stated the acting director, underscoring the importance of the review process, despite its frustratingly slow pace.
The acting director expressed personal responsibility for the near loss of a protected individual and lamented the impact of these failures on the family of a father and husband who lost his life. In response, the director has prioritized eliminating the detrimental “do more with less” mindset that has long undermined both workforce morale and protective operations.
Progress is being made within the Secret Service, aided by recent legislative support. Thanks to Congress, the continuing resolution passed in September has allocated additional funding to the Secret Service for Fiscal Year 2025. This funding will address immediate needs related to protective operations. “I greatly appreciate the efforts of Congress and numerous staff members in making that supplemental a reality,” the acting director noted, emphasizing the importance of this financial support in enhancing the agency’s capabilities.
