A Massive Data Center Transforms Port Washington Amidst Controversy

In the serene landscapes of Port Washington, Wisconsin, a colossal construction project is stirring both awe and unrest. Situated just north of Milwaukee, this hyper-scale data center stretches along two miles of highway, covering a vast 2.5 million square feet of what was once farmland. As artificial intelligence companies accelerate their data center expansions, the impacts on local communities have become a national conversation.

During a recent visit, NPR host Sacha Pfeiffer and producer Henry Larson observed the massive scale of the project, which has become a focal point of contention in the area. “It’s huge,” Larson remarked, unable to find words to describe the enormity of the construction.

The data center development has sparked heated protests, legal battles, and civil disobedience as residents express their opposition. The resistance is fueled by concerns over mental health impacts and the dramatic transformation of their community. Amanda Mueller, a 67-year-old resident, recalls her initial discovery of the impending changes two years ago when local farmers began selling their land. “This was my last move. I feel like an elephant looking for a place to die in life, and I found utopia,” Mueller shared, lamenting the loss of her ideal retirement home.

Despite opposition, Port Washington’s Mayor Ted Neitzke stands as a strong proponent of the project, envisioning it as a catalyst for economic growth. “Change is something that does not come easy to small Midwestern towns,” Neitzke commented, drawing parallels to past controversial developments that ultimately benefited the community.

The $15 billion data center project, part of a program called Stargate, involves a partnership with Oracle and OpenAI. Although the specifics of the contract remain undisclosed, the project promises to bring thousands of jobs, infrastructure improvements, and increased tax revenue to the area.

During a tour of the construction site, Victoria Tyson-Bloyd, overseeing the project for Vantage Data Centers, explained the infrastructure supporting the cooling, heating, and communication systems necessary for the data centers. However, the lack of transparency regarding the project’s duration and purpose has left residents uneasy.

Mueller and Neitzke find common ground in acknowledging the public’s apprehension about the unknown uses of AI. “Nobody knows what they do,” Neitzke admitted, attributing the opposition to a gap in public knowledge and understanding.

As Port Washington grapples with the rapid development, Mayor Neitzke remains focused on the benefits he believes the data center will bring, questioning what others would do in his position to ensure the city’s prosperity.
