When a young South African boy’s chance meeting with a gas station worker turned into a genuine friendship, he made a selfless decision that would change both their lives. The 10-year-old chose to empty his carefully collected savings to purchase something his new friend desperately needed.
The heartwarming story began when Vaughn, accompanied by his mother Mandy Fish, stopped at a gas station in KwaZulu-Natal where they encountered Tony, an attendant working there. The timing of their first meeting was particularly significant, as the young boy wasn’t feeling well at the time.

An unexpected friendship forms
According to Mandy Fish, “Vaughn was very sick, and within moments the attendant had him laughing and smiling.” This initial connection blossomed into regular visits to the station. She added, “Since then we regularly visit the station and Vaughn eagerly looks out for his new friend.”
The bond between the youngster and Tony grew stronger with each visit. “Tony always takes the time to talk to Vaughn about the various bikes we haul to Giba and back and listens so obligingly to him as he chatters away,” Mandy shared.
A simple request sparks generosity
During one of their conversations, Tony mentioned he was searching for an affordable bicycle and asked if they could help him find one. The boy agreed to keep an eye out, but what happened next surprised everyone. Just days after that conversation, Vaughn approached his mother with an extraordinary proposal—he wanted to purchase a brand-new bicycle for Tony using his personal savings.

The money represented months of diligent saving. Mandy said, “Vaughn has been collecting all the silver money around the house for months, saving for a ‘holiday’ for us. One night he came to me and asked if I really wanted a holiday and upon asking why he said he would rather put his savings towards helping Tony get his bike.”
A gift that brought unexpected joy
The family broke open the piggy bank and used every coin to make the purchase. When they presented Tony with his new bicycle, the attendant’s reaction was priceless. Mandy posted on her Facebook, “Our children make us proud on so many occasions but today my heart and his is so full of the joy at the kind man’s face as he, rather stunned, accepted his gift from this 10-year-old boy.”
In an emotional message to her son, she further wrote, “Prawn Fish it will be years until your mom allows you on Facebook but when you do see this post, know that today of all your days on this planet so far my heart is the fullest and most proud of you it’s ever been. Keep being kind, and generous, with your time and money and remember bringing joy to others can bring just as much joy to yourself.”
