A Milestone Celebration for YouVersion Bible App Draws Thousands
The Paycom Center in Oklahoma City was transformed into a grand worship venue on Nov. 17, as over 13,000 attendees celebrated a landmark achievement: the billionth download of the YouVersion Bible App. This event highlighted the app’s profound impact on global Scripture engagement and featured performances from prominent Christian artists.
Developed by Life.Church in Edmond, Oklahoma, the YouVersion Bible App has become a pivotal tool for digital faith communities worldwide, offering Bible translations in over 2,000 languages. At the event, YouVersion founder Bobby Gruenewald emphasized the importance of Scripture over technology, stating, “I just wanted this to be a moment for the Bible, not something we’ve done, not something our team has done, but something God has done.”
The celebration included performances by renowned artists such as CeCe Winans, Lauren Daigle, Chris Tomlin, Brooke Ligertwood, and Phil Wickham, accompanied by a full orchestra. Gruenewald curated the musical lineup with intention, explaining, “I didn’t want to just say ‘praise God.’ I wanted us to actually praise God.”
In between musical performances, various pastors and speakers shared stories and testimonies about the transformative power of the Bible. Notable figures, including Rick Warren, Manny Pacquiao, and Tim Tebow, contributed messages either in person or by video.
Among the evening’s poignant moments was a testimony from a mother recounting how the Bible App for Kids played a crucial role in her nonverbal autistic son Kent’s development, especially after the untimely death of his father. She credited the app with helping Kent begin to speak by reciting Bible stories, saying, “I believe the Word of God gave my son words.”
Filmmaker Dallas Jenkins, known for “The Chosen,” shared insights about how characters from the show sparked increased searches on the app, reinforcing the connection between digital media and Scripture discovery. “That’s exactly why I do what I do,” Jenkins stated, recognizing the impact of his work in directing people to the Bible.
Craig Groeschel, Senior Pastor of Life.Church, narrated his personal journey of faith initiated by a Gideon Bible he received during college. He emphasized the power of Scripture in personal transformation, urging the audience to embrace its life-changing message.
Christine Caine, an influential author and speaker, provided a heartfelt reflection on how Scripture helped her heal from past traumas and reshape her identity. She urged the audience to trust in the truth of God’s Word over cultural narratives, declaring, “Facts are real, but truth is higher.”
Gruenewald highlighted the increasing global engagement with the Bible, noting the app’s significant reach and the growing demand for both digital and print versions amid cultural uncertainties. “When people aren’t sure what’s real, they look for what can be trusted. God’s Word stands alone,” he explained.
Throughout the event, speakers reiterated that the celebration was a tribute to Scripture itself and not to any individual or organization. In his closing remarks, Gruenewald stated, “Our milestone is just one data point in what God is doing around the world.”
“It’s been a humbling thing to be a part of, but it is 1,000 percent something God has done,” Gruenewald added. “We want our milestone to be an indication that God is doing something special globally with His Word.”
