When four-year-old Brinley Wisick pointed a flashlight out of her hospital window at the Cleveland Clinic, she had no idea she was about to forge a bond that would brighten her darkest days. What began as a simple flash of light between a sick child and construction workers across the street has blossomed into a daily ritual of hope and compassion.
Brinley, who is waiting for a life-saving heart transplant, was passing time with her father when they aimed a flashlight beam at a building under construction nearby. The playful gesture caught the attention of workers on the site, and one responded by shining his light back at them. He then surprised the family by holding up a handmade sign reading “Get well soon.” The family quickly crafted their own sign saying “Thanks,” marking the beginning of an extraordinary connection.
Construction workers learn of child’s condition
The crew soon discovered the reason behind Brinley’s extended hospital stay. Learning that the young girl needed a heart transplant profoundly affected the workers. One crew member reflected on the impact: “It really changed my perspective on a lot of things, and I think a lot of the guys around here felt the same.”
The revelation moved the hardened construction team to action. They visited Brinley’s hospital room bearing gifts that included an oversized teddy bear and a personalized hard hat signed by every member of the crew—items that hold special meaning for both the child and the men who brought them.
Daily gestures of support continue
Perhaps most touching is the crew’s unwavering commitment to Brinley. Despite their work having progressed to different areas of the building, the workers make a point to return to the original floor every single day before leaving the job site. There, they flash a heart sign to Brinley through the window, a gesture that has become a cherished daily routine. According to Brinley’s mother, the sentiment is clear: “They love her.”
As Brinley continues her wait for a suitable donor heart, she does so knowing she has an entire construction crew cheering her on from across the street. The friendship serves as a powerful reminder of human kindness during challenging circumstances.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”
