When Joe Symonds made a delivery mistake and arrived at the wrong address in Vancouver, Washington, he had no idea that this simple error would become a divine appointment that would transform his entire future. The 87-year-old DoorDash driver’s accidental stop at Alyona Dikiy’s home became the catalyst for an extraordinary outpouring of generosity from strangers around the world.
For approximately 18 months, Symonds had been working as a delivery driver to manage his debts and cover the cost of his medications. The octogenarian spent his days navigating neighborhoods and carrying food orders, often struggling with staircases and uneven terrain.
The physical challenges of delivering at 87
The job came with significant physical demands for someone his age. Symonds acknowledged the difficulties he faced, particularly when dealing with stairs and maintaining his balance on what should be simple walks.
“I’ve had a few issues on flat ground where I’ve managed to trip myself and fall down,” he said. “Fortunately, nothing serious has happened.”
A chance meeting that sparked compassion
When Symonds appeared at Dikiy’s residence by mistake, she was outside working in her garage. She immediately noticed something seemed off about the elderly man’s presence. Rather than simply correcting the delivery error, Dikiy approached Symonds and initiated a conversation that would change both their lives.
Learning his age left her stunned. “You couldn’t imagine that being your own grandpa or grandma doing that,” she said.
Dikiy’s immediate response was to hand Symonds $100 and encourage him to end his work day early. But her generosity didn’t stop there. After obtaining his consent, she filmed a brief video and launched a GoFundMe page with the goal of helping him retire from delivery work.
“Once it was at like $400, I was like, ‘Joe, we’re at like $400! You can take a couple of days off!'” she recalled. “Then it just kept going up and up and up.”
Overwhelming support from around the globe
Within days, the fundraiser exceeded $30,000 as donations poured in from people worldwide who had never met Symonds. The campaign has now accumulated more than $44,000, ensuring the elderly driver can finally step away from the grueling delivery work.
The financial relief was almost incomprehensible to Symonds, who expressed profound gratitude for the unexpected support.
“I think you’re the kindest, most fantastic people that I could imagine,” he said. “I never thought there were people like that — people who would donate to a complete stranger they had never met.”
More than just money
Beyond the financial impact, the experience brought other meaningful changes to Symonds’ life. He can now purchase necessities like shoes without financial anxiety. Perhaps equally valuable, he gained a genuine friendship with Dikiy.
“She’s my angel,” he said.
For her part, Dikiy sees the response as evidence of widespread human goodness. “I think that a lot of people have really good hearts,” she said.
