President Trump is currently exerting pressure on Senate Republicans concerning his plans for leadership within the intelligence community. This has resulted in a delay in the confirmation of his nominee for the director of national intelligence, while Bill Pulte has been appointed to a temporary position.

This decision has attracted criticism from various quarters, particularly from Democrats. One vocal critic is Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., who has a background as a CIA analyst.

In an interview with NPR’s Morning Edition, Slotkin expressed her concerns, stating that Trump’s reasoning for appointing Pulte is “exactly why Pulte should never” assume the role of director of national intelligence. She contends that Trump aims to leverage the intelligence community to support his assertions regarding the 2020 election.

Slotkin further highlighted Pulte’s current responsibility in overseeing federal housing programs and alleged that he has already misused access to government records to target individuals perceived as political adversaries by Trump.

“The idea that he won’t do the exact same thing in the DNI office, but with more tools, is just folly,” she said.

Senator Slotkin, a frequent critic of Trump, also took issue with the president’s threat to block the reauthorization of a segment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), describing it as “cutting off your nose to spite your face.”

“The president’s primary responsibility is to protect against foreign threats,” Slotkin stated. “As someone who was a CIA analyst and wrote the presidential daily brief for the president on the topics I was covering, this is important information to get right.”
