When negative thoughts consume your mind, turning to Scripture may offer more than just comfort—it could provide a practical strategy for spiritual warfare. Lynn Touchette, an elderly believer, has shared her approach to combating destructive thinking patterns through biblical principles that emphasize personal authority in Christ.
Mental struggles affect believers and non-believers alike, but for Christians, persistent negative thinking can create distance in their relationship with God. Touchette’s teaching addresses this challenge by focusing on what she describes as the believer’s God-given authority to reject thoughts that contradict Scripture.
Taking thoughts captive through scripture
Central to Touchette’s message is 2 Corinthians 10:5, which instructs believers to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Rather than viewing this as a passive request for divine intervention, she interprets it as an active exercise of spiritual authority.
“It is taking authority over evil, over Satan by using our God-given authority in the name of Jesus to command the enemy to leave us and to go,” Touchette explains in her message.
The source of spiritual authority
Touchette emphasizes that this power to reject negative thoughts doesn’t originate from within ourselves. Instead, it comes from Jesus’s name, His sacrificial blood, the written Word of God, and the Holy Spirit. When confronted with thoughts that contradict biblical truth, she recommends a verbal response.
“You say, ‘Nope, that is not what the word says. This is what the word says, and this is who I am,'” she explains, advocating for speaking Scripture aloud as a defensive measure.
Walking in freedom
Touchette concludes her teaching with prayer, asking for boldness against spiritual attacks and encouraging believers to embrace the freedom already secured through Christ’s death and resurrection.
“Our victory will be determined by the knowledge of who we are in Christ,” she says.
Her approach suggests that understanding one’s identity in Christ serves as the foundation for resisting negative thought patterns. By speaking God’s Word directly against intrusive thoughts and reminding themselves of the authority they possess through Jesus, believers can actively combat mental and spiritual attacks rather than simply enduring them.
