In the wake of two devastating earthquakes, Venezuelan Christians are grappling with heightened difficulties, as local churches struggle to provide aid amid their own challenges. The earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, have compounded existing pressures from state authorities, leaving communities vulnerable and desperate for support.
Open Doors, an organization monitoring Christian persecution, reports that churches already under surveillance and facing restrictions are now striving to aid traumatized communities despite incurring significant damages themselves.
Concerns have surfaced regarding inequitable access to humanitarian aid. Some Christian groups allege that relief efforts have been biased towards government supporters, leaving certain church communities without essential assistance.
A local partner from Open Doors stated, “The Venezuelan church, as a social actor in the country, has been living in constant uncertainty. Now, this tragedy – one that has plunged society as a whole into mourning – is added to that context. The church is overwhelmed, mobilising to contribute in any way possible while praying for divine intervention amid the immense needs the country is facing.”
Church infrastructure has not been spared, with reports of buildings collapsing, such as one in La Guaira. Christian leaders are actively supporting displaced members and local residents who have suffered the loss of their homes and livelihoods.
A pastor from the affected area expressed the widespread fear, saying, “Last night we were very frightened.” Another Christian noted the extent of the devastation: “Many people are in distress after losing everything, with multiple structures collapsed.”
Despite these hardships, local believers are organizing relief efforts and community support in the worst-hit areas. One Christian from Aragua state commented, “Out here with the neighbours, we have been supporting one another, staying together and bringing calm during the night and this difficult time.”
The earthquakes, which struck on June 24, caused extensive damage in northern Venezuela, affecting major areas including the capital Caracas and La Guaira. The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency, with thousands displaced and critical infrastructure severely impacted.
Communication challenges due to power outages have compounded the crisis, preventing many from contacting family members within and outside Venezuela. A local Christian highlighted the anxiety, saying, “The main concern for Venezuelan families at this moment is knowing whether their missing relatives are still alive.”
Open Doors is urging for prayers for all affected, particularly Christian communities striving to help others while managing their own significant needs.
