In a world where people often pass by those in need, two teenagers in Auckland, New Zealand, demonstrated the kind of compassion that restores faith in humanity. Their simple act of kindness has captured hearts around the world after a bystander photographed the moment and shared it on social media.
Blake Ockleston and Daniel Coyle-Smith, both 13 years old, were engrossed in their favorite mobile game, Pokémon Go, in the New Lynn area when something caught their attention. An elderly gentleman with a walker was attempting to navigate a pedestrian crossing, visibly struggling with each step.
A moment of decision
“He looked like he was struggling to walk,” Ockleston recalled, noting the man was shaking as he tried to make his way across the intersection.
Without hesitation, the two friends abandoned their game and rushed to assist. They positioned themselves on either side of the man, providing physical support as he attempted to cross. However, the traffic light changed before they could safely reach the other side, creating a dangerous situation.
Coyle-Smith quickly stepped into action, stopping oncoming traffic to ensure their safety. The boys then came up with a creative solution to help the struggling man complete his journey more easily.
“We decided to sit him down on his walker and we pushed him across, and then again at the next crossing,” Coyle-Smith said.
Going the extra mile
Rather than simply helping the man across the street and leaving, the teenagers escorted him all the way to the train station. Once there, they found a security guard and requested assistance to ensure the elderly man would be properly cared for.
The heartwarming scene did not go unnoticed. Lyqueeshah Brooks witnessed the entire interaction and captured it on camera. She posted the image to Facebook with an emotional message: “My heart is so full [right now].”
Brooks added: “These boys helped this man cross 2 pedestrians in new lynn right now .. shout out to these boys parents if it wasnt for them no cars would have waited for this man to cross.”
The photograph and story quickly gained traction on social media, with countless people praising the young men for their compassion and quick thinking in a moment when someone needed help.
