Community Mourns the Loss of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Amidst Tensions with ICE

A gathering characterized by sorrow and anger took place in Houston, where over 200 individuals participated in a vigil to commemorate Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. The tragic incident, resulting in his death during an encounter with ICE agents, has sparked significant controversy.

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

Last weekend, a vigil in Houston brought together more than 200 people to honor the memory of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was fatally shot in an incident involving ICE last week. The agency claims the shooting was in self-defense, a statement contested by other occupants in the vehicle with Salgado Araujo. Bianca Seward from Houston Public Media reports on the event.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: (Singing) Ave Maria.

BIANCA SEWARD, BYLINE: Attendees, holding candles and anti-ICE posters, gathered at the Service Employees International Union headquarters, expressing both grief and fury. Emily Chapman, a pastor from St. Mark’s Methodist, shared her feelings of helplessness in the wake of the shooting.

EMILY CHAPMAN: I wanted to be with people and honor the life of a person and think about what we can do to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

SEWARD: Hany Khalil, a local labor union executive director, initiated the ceremony with a motivational speech.

HANY KHALIL: So each of us now faces a choice. Are we going to fight for the Houston We Love?

UNIDENTIFIED PEOPLE: Yes.

SEWARD: The vigil alternated between expressing outrage over the circumstances of Salgado Araujo’s death and mourning his loss. His son, Ronaldo, voiced frustration over the lack of information from authorities.

RONALDO SALGADO: It doesn’t get easier. And I’m, of course, still looking for answers.

SEWARD: The incident unfolded last Tuesday when ICE agents stopped Salgado Araujo’s van. According to an ICE spokesperson, Salgado Araujo allegedly rammed his vehicle into an ICE car and attempted to run over an agent, prompting the agent to shoot in self-defense. However, Hugo Balderas, the attorney representing two men who were with Salgado Araujo, disputes this account.

HUGO BALDERAS: They confirmed that at no point was there ever an ICE agent directly in front of the vehicle. They also confirmed that the shots came from the sides, not from the front.

SEWARD: For local resident Anthony Bower, the event is a call to action.

ANTHONY BOWER: We got to come out and show out because if you’re doing this in our community, what other communities are you doing it in as well?

SEWARD: Additional protests are planned in the coming days.
