A recent report by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has shed light on the escalating suppression of freedoms in Cuba, especially targeting religious groups. This revelation comes as the nation marks five years since widespread protests against economic and political constraints erupted on July 11, 2021.

The protests were sparked by dire shortages of food and medicine, strict Covid measures, and limited economic prospects, culminating in at least one fatality and numerous arrests as the government responded with a heavy hand.

CSW’s report highlights that beyond political repression, there is now an intensified crackdown on religious liberties. Between January 2025 and June 2026, the organization documented 667 cases where religious freedoms were compromised, affecting various denominations, both officially recognized and unregistered.

These violations ranged from verbal abuse of children due to their faith to arbitrary detentions, surveillance, and threats against individuals. The report also notes that Cuban authorities are using Actas de Advertencia to jail individuals for alleged future crimes, further intimidating religious leaders.

One notable case involves Protestant Pastor Alexis Padrón Lorenzo, who was detained in June and remains incommunicado. Known for his outspoken criticism of the communist regime and advocacy for ordinary Cubans, Pastor Padrón Lorenzo was accused of “public disorder” after confronting government officials.

Reports suggest Pastor Padrón Lorenzo was physically mistreated during interrogation, with concerns for his health due to his rheumatoid arthritis.

Anna Lee Stangl, CSW’s Director of Advocacy and Americas Team Leader, commented, “Five years since Cubans from all walks of life took to the streets to demand justice, human rights and democracy, their calls remain intentionally unheeded by the Cuban Communist Party, which instead remains intent on rejecting any idea of political or social reform even as Cuba grapples with an increasingly acute humanitarian crisis.”

Stangl further urged the international community to “honour the bravery of Cubans across the island, including many religious leaders, who continue to speak publicly and honestly about the situation in the country by amplifying their voices and seeking creative and co-ordinated ways to support them.”
