When Amy and Steven McMillan’s home security cameras abruptly went dark during their Father’s Day vacation in Colorado, they had no idea their entire world was about to change. Within moments, frantic phone calls from neighbors confirmed their worst fears: their Texas home was engulfed in flames.
The McMillan family had been enjoying quality time together in Durango, Colorado, riding scenic trains and ziplining with their young son to celebrate Father’s Day. Their peaceful getaway was shattered on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3:30 PM when Amy noticed her security cameras had suddenly stopped working. The subsequent phone calls brought devastating news that would send them racing back to Texas.
Complete devastation awaited their return
Upon arriving home, the family confronted the total loss of their residence. Investigators suspect an electrical malfunction in a rear bedroom ignited the blaze that consumed everything they owned. The structure was a complete loss, with all their possessions reduced to rubble and ash.
The tragedy claimed the lives of several beloved pets, including a mother cat and her four kittens. However, their elderly Dalmatian, Rocky, managed to survive by breaking out of his enclosure in the front yard and fleeing to safety. Other family pets also made it through the disaster.
A remarkable find in the rubble
As the McMillans sifted through the still-warm debris of their destroyed home, they made an extraordinary discovery. Three family Bibles had survived the inferno intact. Though drenched from firefighting efforts and covered in black soot, the holy books remained whole amid the destruction.
Reflecting on this discovery, Amy shared, “It’s just ironic that the important things survived and the material objects were destroyed”.
Facing an uncertain future without insurance
The family’s situation became more complicated when it was revealed they had no homeowner’s insurance coverage at the time of the fire. Currently residing in a local inn, the McMillans face a lengthy and challenging path toward rebuilding their lives from scratch.
Despite these overwhelming circumstances, Amy maintains a remarkably positive perspective rooted in her faith. She expressed, “God is our number one priority. He’s all that we need. We don’t need a house. We don’t need material things. As long as we’re all together, then that’s all that really matters”.
The biblical passage from 2 Corinthians 4:18 echoes the family’s outlook: “while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
