As Britain faces what could be its hottest and driest summer in history, the Church of England is calling upon its followers to pray for relief from the severe weather conditions. The nation has already experienced five heatwaves this summer, with the green think tank Verdant estimating a £4.4 billion loss in productivity due to these extreme temperatures.

The agricultural sector is bearing the brunt of the dry spell, as the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit reports a reduction of 2.5 million tonnes in cereal and oilseed yields. This trend is mirrored across Europe, suggesting an impending rise in food prices.

Beyond economic repercussions, the heat has sparked wildfires and claimed 2,877 lives due to “heat-related” causes in July alone. In response, churches are providing both practical aid and spiritual solace to those affected.

The Church of England has reintroduced its resource A Time for Creation, which includes prayers specifically for farmers and times of extreme weather. The Bishop of Lichfield, Michael Ipgrave, who chairs the Church of England’s Liturgical Commission, emphasized the historical importance of such prayers, referencing their inclusion in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

“For centuries, the people of England have turned to prayer in times of extreme weather of all sorts,” he said.

“In this fearful time of excessive heat and drought, we remember in particular those affected by fires, farmers, and people suffering because of the heat, and all those who care for them.”

He elaborated, “The prayer book asks that we may receive ‘in our necessity such moderate rain and showers’ as we need. Our prayers invite us to ask, to wait and to know the glory and awesomeness of God when they are answered.”

Prayers for rain have a long tradition, even appearing in the Old Testament, where the prophet Elijah prayed for rain to end a severe drought. Similarly, King Solomon sought divine intervention for rain during drought at the Temple’s dedication.
