Genelle Guzman-McMillan’s survival story from September 11, 2001 stands out not just because she was the final person rescued alive from Ground Zero, but because of the mysterious encounter she had while trapped beneath 30 feet of debris. What happened during those 27 hours in darkness would transform her life in ways she never anticipated.

On that fateful Tuesday morning, Guzman-McMillan was at her desk on the 64th floor of the North Tower where she worked for the Port Authority. The 31-year-old had only begun her position earlier that year when the first plane struck the upper floors of the building.

The escape attempt and collapse

The impact caused the massive structure to shake violently, and Guzman-McMillan watched office papers drift past her window like snowflakes. Initially instructed to remain in place, she and her colleagues waited anxiously while she made frantic calls to her boyfriend Roger and family members to express her love.

After the second plane struck the South Tower, fifteen people including Guzman-McMillan and her best friend Rosa decided to evacuate via the stairwell. They descended carefully, hand-in-hand, counting each flight. Around the 30th floor, they encountered firefighters ascending, which gave them a temporary sense of reassurance about their safety.

When the group reached the 13th floor, Guzman-McMillan paused to remove her high heel boots. At that precise moment, the tower collapsed around them, burying her under thousands of tons of concrete and steel. Her head became wedged against a concrete pillar while her legs were crushed beneath the rubble.

A mysterious visitor in the darkness

Trapped 30 feet below the surface, Guzman-McMillan endured excruciating pain and contemplated giving up entirely. Though her mother had been a devoted Christian, she had previously rejected that faith and chosen to live independently. However, in those desperate hours beneath the ruins, she recalled her mother’s beliefs and began speaking to God.

She prayed for a miraculous sign, saying “God, You know this. I know You can do miracle, from what my mom told me. Testimony of what I’ve heard and seen — I know You can do miracles. Just show me a sign that You’re there. Just show me a sign that You’re listening to me.”

As she neared complete despair, a hand grasped her free left hand. A man who identified himself as Paul called her by name and reassured her that she would survive and that rescue teams were approaching. He remained with her, offering comfort, until search and rescue workers located her with the help of a search dog named Trakr.

An unexplained disappearance

After 27 hours of entrapment, rescue workers finally freed Guzman-McMillan from the debris. Remarkably, Paul had vanished. None of the rescuers had seen or communicated with anyone matching his description. He had known her name without asking and disappeared the moment she was safe. Guzman-McMillan believes Paul was a guardian angel sent by God to sustain her through the ordeal.

As the last survivor extracted from the wreckage that day, she spent a month hospitalized and underwent four surgeries to save her severely injured right leg. True to the promise she made while buried, she was baptized later that year and married Roger. She documented her experience in a book titled Angel in the Rubble.

Reflecting on her survival, she says, “I’m truly God’s walking miracle. I would say to people, I don’t like people to say you’re lucky. I say I’m blessed, because it’s all God’s grace.”

Her story resonates with the scripture from Isaiah 43:1: “But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.'”

Guzman-McMillan’s mother, who passed away in 1999, had been a woman of strong faith who undoubtedly prayed for her daughter. Though she didn’t live to see it, those prayers were answered during one of the nation’s darkest moments, when her daughter found faith amid the rubble of the World Trade Center.
