The UK government is under scrutiny as it drafts a bill aimed at addressing conversion therapy, a practice that has sparked controversy and debate for years. This legislation could introduce a new criminal offence, coupled with civil measures, even as the global community lacks a consensus on what conversion therapy precisely entails.

According to the government, they have extensively reviewed available evidence, engaged in discussions with various stakeholders, and examined international practices to identify gaps in current British legislation. However, critics argue that the government has only considered one perspective.

A former gay activist shared insights, claiming to be a testament to the benefits of therapy and prayer, which he said were pivotal in his personal transformation and acceptance of a new sexual identity.

He recounted his journey from being openly gay during his university days in London to embracing Christianity, leading to a significant change in his sexual orientation. Through therapy and spiritual practices, he found new possibilities and eventually married and started a family.

For two decades, he has supported individuals across Europe dealing with same-sex attraction, gender dysphoria, and trauma from past abuse. His work continues in Australia, where he founded the Survivors’ Support Network to provide free support to those in need.

Despite the positive impact of his work, state laws in Victoria and other parts of Australia have restricted what are termed as conversion practices. These laws severely penalize individuals and professionals attempting to engage in discussions about sexual identity changes, even in therapeutic settings.

The Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021 in Victoria has introduced stringent penalties, including up to ten years of imprisonment for those involved in such practices. This situation has led to increased suffering among individuals seeking help, as many therapists now avoid discussing trauma’s influence on sexual identity due to the legal risks.

Stories from the Survivors’ Support Network highlight the devastating impact of these laws. One particularly troubling case involves a young man from rural Victoria who has struggled with severe trauma and suicide attempts following the enactment of the Act.

As the debate continues, Tasmania and Western Australia face pressure to implement similar legislation. Critics argue that these laws have strained the trust and support systems previously available to victim-survivors, exacerbating their struggles.

Interestingly, Victoria’s government is reviewing the effectiveness of its 2021 Act, as no arrests or charges have been made under this law. This raises questions about the law’s impact and efficacy.

With approximately 1.7 million adults experiencing sexual assault annually in the UK, there is concern that adopting similar laws could hinder necessary discussions about trauma and its effects on sexual identity.

The UK government is urged to thoroughly consider all evidence and perspectives before proceeding with legislation that could impact many individuals. The Christian community, historically known for advocating for the vulnerable, is called upon to voice their concerns and support those affected by these issues.
