After 48 harrowing hours in Kentucky’s wilderness, a 6-year-old autistic child has been reunited with his family, thanks to an extraordinary community effort. The young boy emerged from the thick brush singing a nursery rhyme, bringing an end to a desperate search that mobilized hundreds of volunteers.
Roman Heilman disappeared from his Louisa, Kentucky home on Sunday afternoon, November 1st. The child was last observed leaving his residence dressed in a green fur jacket, red-and-white pants, and Crocs, according to police spokesperson Sherry Bray.
Massive search operation launched
The search effort grew to include over 300 volunteers who combed through challenging terrain both on foot and horseback. Kentucky State Police coordinated with search-and-rescue teams from surrounding states to locate the missing child.
Children with autism often exhibit wandering behaviors and may not respond to their names when called, making search efforts particularly challenging. These children can become easily overwhelmed and may not recognize dangerous situations, adding urgency to any rescue operation.
Critical clues discovered
Search teams made a breakthrough when they discovered a muddy footprint that eventually led them to Roman’s discarded clothing, including his diaper. Emergency management director Travis Hughes recognized the gravity of the situation as weather conditions deteriorated with approaching rain.
In a creative attempt to locate the child, the National Autism Association recommended that searchers sing “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” one of Roman’s favorite songs, hoping the familiar tune might encourage him to respond and reveal his location.
Dramatic rescue
Roman walked out of the wilderness on Tuesday morning approximately a mile and a half from his home. Despite being naked, dehydrated, and scratched by briars, the child was alive. His small dog had stayed with him throughout the entire ordeal.
Local resident Jacob Mullins described the moment of discovery: “He came out of the bushes saying ‘E-I-E-I-O horsey.’ He just walked right out of the bushes over onto a horse trail.” The search team quickly provided Roman with a sweatshirt, gave him a banana, and transported him down the mountain for medical evaluation.
