Welcome to Highland Park Presbyterian Church, a community dedicated to fostering a deep and genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. This week, we embarked on a sermon series titled “Welcome Home,” exploring the notion of home as a place where we find security and belonging. Our church strives to be a home where everyone is encouraged to love, seek, and return to Jesus.
The message began with an engaging anecdote about the pastor’s first international travel experience, highlighting the joy and innocence of discovery. This story served as a metaphor for the Christian journey, reminding us that our faith can sometimes feel routine, and we may lose the excitement and joy that once defined our relationship with God. The challenge is to rekindle that passion and see God for who He truly is: a God capable of doing the impossible.
Rediscovering God’s Power: The Story of Joshua
The sermon took us to Joshua 10:7-14, where Joshua leads the Israelites into battle against the Amorite kings. Despite being outnumbered, God assures Joshua of victory, saying, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands” (Joshua 10:8). This passage demonstrates that God fights our battles in advance, securing victories we may not even be aware of.
In a miraculous turn of events, as the Israelites pursued their enemies, God sent a hailstorm that claimed more lives than the sword. This divine intervention underscores that God can achieve immeasurable outcomes in ways beyond human understanding or planning. As the pastor shared, “God can do exceedingly more in a short amount of time than we can ever do with all of our strategizing and planning.”
The Power of Bold Prayer
Joshua’s bold prayer for the sun to stand still (Joshua 10:12) was highlighted as an example of faith in action. Despite the audacity of this request, God honored Joshua’s prayer, reinforcing the idea that God listens to and acts on behalf of those who pray with genuine hearts. The pastor emphasized the importance of praying boldly and authentically, trusting that God doesn’t require perfection in our words, but desires our sincere hearts.
The sermon also addressed the fear of unanswered prayers, urging us to release our need to control outcomes and trust God’s timing and wisdom. As Dallas Willard noted, “We need to abandon outcomes to God.” This act of surrender allows us to embrace God’s character and timing, leading to spiritual growth and alignment with His will.
Finding Home in God’s Presence
The narrative of Joshua’s battle is also a story of redemption and divine purpose. Despite Joshua’s initial mistake of forming an alliance with the Gibeonites, God transformed the situation into a miraculous victory, reminding us that God can turn our errors into opportunities for His glory. The pastor reassured us, “Our God is able to turn our mistakes into a miracle.”
Finally, the sermon drew a parallel between Joshua’s victory and Jesus’ crucifixion, where God allowed darkness to fall as His Son died for humanity’s sins. Jesus’ sacrifice and subsequent resurrection provide us with eternal light and hope. In this truth, we are invited to place our trust in God’s promises, knowing that Jesus’ victory is our assurance of belonging and thriving in God’s home.
As we conclude this message, consider how you can trust God in areas where you may have lost faith. What bold prayers can you offer, believing in God’s ability to accomplish the impossible? Let us return to the heart of worship, where we find our true home in Christ.
