Presbyterian Church Leader Resigns Amid Safeguarding Failures
In a significant development, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland has announced the resignation of its Moderator, Rev Trevor Gribben, following revelations of safeguarding lapses. These shortcomings, which span over a decade, have reportedly endangered individuals within the church community.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, Rev Gribben will vacate his position by the month’s end. The issues in question occurred from 2009 to 2022, prompting an internal review that uncovered substantial safeguarding deficiencies.
“Following an internal investigation and report, it has become clear that there have been serious and significant failings in the central safeguarding functions of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland,” Rev Gribben stated. He further acknowledged the harm caused, noting, “As a result of this, people have been placed at risk. We are aware of a number of people who have been harmed, and we believe there may well be others as yet unknown to us. We apologise unreservedly for this.”
Emphasizing the Church’s commitment to those affected, Rev Gribben remarked, “The Church’s first and greatest concern about this is for those people who have suffered harm, and those who have been put at risk.” He conveyed the Church’s deep regret and intention to support the victims.
Appointed as Moderator in June, Rev Gribben also holds the roles of Clerk of the Assembly and General Secretary, positions he has decided to relinquish as well. He expressed profound regret, stating, “I have made these decisions and taken these steps with the deepest personal regret that our central failings have caused such harm to those who deserve our protection the most.”
Rev David Bruce, who convenes the Church’s General Council, disclosed that the Safeguarding Team identified numerous instances between 2009 and 2021, with an additional case in 2022, where safeguarding measures were insufficient. He cited failures in responding to concerns and neglecting to engage statutory authorities when necessary.
Rev Bruce highlighted the exacerbation of these failings due to poor record-keeping practices, admitting, “These failings were magnified by major gaps in necessary record keeping, so it is inevitable that we have not identified all situations where practice was unacceptable.”
Meanwhile, Rev Dr David Allen, the acting Clerk of the General Assembly, confirmed that the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is investigating one individual. He also mentioned three Presbyterian congregations across the Irish border where individuals have come forward with information.
