When a family’s oven breaks down in a household of 10, it’s more than an inconvenience—it’s a crisis. For 17-year-old Natalie Dickson, the timing couldn’t have been worse, as she relies on that same oven to fulfill orders for her growing bakery business.

A busy life balancing business and family

Living in Rexburg, Idaho, Natalie is the sole daughter among eight children in her family. She operates The Baking Ninja, a bakery specializing in gourmet cookies and sweet rolls that she’s been selling at the Rexburg Farmers Market for three years. Despite her young age, she juggles homeschooling with college courses at BYU-Idaho while helping raise her younger brothers, essentially serving as a second mother figure in the household.

When the family’s essential oven stopped working, it created an urgent problem for both daily family meals and Natalie’s pending business orders. The replacement seemed financially out of reach at a particularly difficult moment.

An unexpected Christmas gift

Help arrived in the form of an anonymous benefactor known as Secret Santa, who distributes $1 million annually to residents of eastern Idaho facing hardships. After learning about Natalie’s situation, the generous donor decided to intervene.

Representatives from East Idaho News appeared at Natalie’s home carrying an envelope containing 10 Home Depot gift cards, each loaded with $500, totaling $5,000. The unexpected windfall left the teenager initially unable to articulate her feelings.

In a subsequent email to the news team, Natalie shared her reaction: “As soon as you left and we closed the door, I asked my mom if what just happened was real—if we really could now afford all the things I want for my baking business and need for our large family. I don’t feel that this is something I deserve for just being the small, obscure Baking Ninja, but I feel so seen and loved.”

Recognizing everyday struggles

The gift represents more than financial assistance—it acknowledges the challenges faced by hardworking individuals managing multiple responsibilities. Natalie’s dedication to her education, business, and family responsibilities demonstrates the type of perseverance that often goes unnoticed until someone takes the time to recognize it.

The Secret Santa initiative continues to provide meaningful support to families throughout eastern Idaho, addressing needs that range from broken appliances to business equipment, demonstrating how targeted generosity can make a significant difference in people’s lives during challenging times.
