When Alabama’s football team suffered a crushing defeat in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, one player’s response captured attention not for his discussion of plays or statistics, but for his unwavering commitment to his Christian faith. Despite the pain of a historic loss, wide receiver Germie Bernard used his platform at the post-game press conference to honor God.

The Crimson Tide faced Indiana in the Rose Bowl, experiencing one of their most difficult performances in recent memory. Alabama found themselves down 17-0 by halftime and never recovered, ultimately falling 38-3. The defeat marked the program’s worst loss since 1998, making it a particularly bitter pill to swallow for players, coaches, and fans alike.

A different kind of victory

Bernard, who led Alabama’s offense during the game with 60 receiving yards and had compiled 64 receptions with seven touchdowns throughout the season, appeared at the press conference alongside teammate Tim Keenan III and head coach Kalen DeBoer. Noticeably written on his eye black was the reference “Matthew 6:33,” pointing to the Bible verse about seeking God’s kingdom first.

As the media session was wrapping up, Bernard requested one final moment to speak. Rather than addressing the disappointing outcome or analyzing what went wrong on the field, he redirected the conversation entirely.

“I just want to give glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing us to have this opportunity, for allowing this team to be here together in California and to enjoy this moment,” Bernard said. He continued by acknowledging the things he remained grateful for despite the loss, particularly that his teammates walked away from the game without injury.

“Even though it didn’t go the way we wanted, it’s still a lot to be grateful for. You know, grateful for guys like TK [Keenan], he went through injury and was able to play throughout the season. So guys were able to play in this game that weren’t healthy throughout the whole year, and we’re able to walk off the field healthy. So it’s just a lot to be grateful for – and I just want to give glory to Jesus Christ for this opportunity,” Bernard told the reporters.

Faith on and off the field

Keenan echoed his teammate’s sentiment, adding simply, “Thank God always.”

This public expression of faith was not an isolated incident for Bernard. He has consistently demonstrated his Christian beliefs throughout his college career, including helping to organize a worship night at the stadium in October that attracted approximately 2,000 attendees.

Bernard’s perspective following the lopsided defeat demonstrates a spiritual maturity that transcends sports. Rather than allowing disappointment to define the moment, he chose to focus on gratitude for the experience, his teammates’ health, and the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college football.
