Church in Wenzhou Faces Imminent Threat Amid Rising Tensions
In a significant development that has captured international attention, a prominent Christian church in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, is reportedly at risk of being demolished by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities. This situation has raised concerns among human rights groups and advocates for religious freedom.
On Monday, hundreds of armed police were deployed to surround Yayang Christian Church, following the dispersal and arrest of nearby Christian residents. According to sources cited by the U.S.-based nonprofit ChinaAid, the situation is described as “extremely tense,” with heavy machinery present, including cranes and bulldozers.

ChinaAid founder Bob Fu, who fled China in 1996 after imprisonment for leading unregistered churches, shared a photograph on X showing scaffolding around the church’s cross, indicating partial demolition. He stated, “Part of the church building is being destroyed forcefully by the CCP [government].”

In a press release, ChinaAid condemned the actions as part of the CCP’s ongoing “Sinicization of religion,” a policy aimed at aligning religious practices with state ideology. The statement highlighted the intimidation and isolation believers face, noting, “Believers are facing intimidation, isolation, and the imminent threat of violent enforcement.”
The situation in Wenzhou is not isolated. Recently, ChinaAid reported that over 1,000 police and paramilitary units conducted crackdowns on Christian congregations in the area. This follows a history of resistance by local Christian groups against government surveillance and demolition efforts that began in 2014.
Local church leaders Lin Enzhao and Lin Enci were detained last month, facing charges often used in political cases. Information about these events has been swiftly censored online, according to numerous residents.
Fu emphasized the resilience of faith despite governmental pressure, urging global communities to respond: “History has shown repeatedly that no regime can extinguish faith through force. If the world remains silent at this critical moment, it will only embolden the CCP to destroy more churches and trample fundamental human dignity.”
ChinaAid’s report from 2023 outlines severe persecution of Christians in China, with reports of imprisonment and torture. The government has also been accused of using financial measures to undermine house churches.
