A quick-thinking eleven-year-old demonstrated remarkable courage when he dove into a swimming pool to rescue a drowning man who was having a medical emergency. While other witnesses stood frozen in shock, young Avory Woolery took immediate action that likely saved a life.
The incident unfolded around 8 p.m. at an apartment complex pool in Lexington, Kentucky. Avory spotted a man sitting motionless at the bottom of the pool, appearing to suffer from a seizure or similar medical episode beneath the water’s surface.
Young swimmer springs into action
Despite the presence of other adults at the pool, no one was moving to assist the distressed man. Avory quickly assessed the situation and made the decision to act. “I was like, somebody’s gotta do something. No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater. I grabbed him up,” he recalled.
After Avory brought the unconscious man to the surface, another bystander assisted in lifting him onto the pool deck. A friend then administered CPR while emergency services were contacted. The fire department transported the victim to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
A life-saving decision rooted in compassion
When speaking with reporters about his heroic actions, Avory expressed a simple but powerful motivation. “There was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He’s a human being. He should be treated as such,” he stated.
Sean Woolery, Avory’s father, expressed immense pride in his son’s actions. He shared that pool attendees approached him to thank him for ensuring his son learned how to swim, a skill that proved invaluable in this life-threatening situation.
The remarkable rescue serves as a powerful reminder that age does not determine one’s ability to make a significant impact. The biblical passage from 1 Timothy 4:12 (NKJV) reflects this sentiment: “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
