As the UK faces economic challenges, Christian charity CARE urges significant tax reform to alleviate financial burdens on families. The charity suggests that the recent Budget measures fall short of providing adequate support to parents under financial strain.

CARE has expressed approval of the additional provisions for self-employed fathers. However, the charity argues that more extensive changes are vital to acknowledge families’ contributions to society.

Caroline Ansell, CARE’s director of advocacy and policy, emphasized the importance of prioritizing family support and eliminating financial barriers to childbearing in the nation’s economic agenda.

“A strong society supports families and removes financial barriers that prevent people having children,” Ansell stated, emphasizing the “vital place” of families in national life.

Despite some households benefiting from measures that provide temporary financial relief amidst the rising cost of living, Ansell questioned their sufficiency.

“But realistically, these amount to very little during the storms that the Chancellor described,” she remarked. “What is really needed is far more radical.”

CARE contends that the current tax system inadequately supports families, with plans to propose reforms by early 2027.

“For years, CARE has championed the need for fundamental reforms to our tax system because right now, the way tax works in this country punishes rather than protects families,” Ansell commented.

She recognized the economic difficulties tied to the Budget, including impacts from the ongoing Middle East conflict, suggesting that comprehensive reforms might be unrealistic at present.

Nonetheless, the charity encourages political parties to contemplate substantial changes in family tax support ahead of the upcoming general election.

“Raising the next generation is mission critical to Britain’s future so tax reform is about national prosperity as well as fairness,” Ansell stated.

“Our hope is that political parties across the House will engage with our new report, be bold in their offer to the British public for the next General Election and set out what they will do to make sure our tax system works for everyone.”

Ansell also supported increased taxes on high-stakes gambling machines and efforts to prevent Adult Gaming Centres from receiving business rate relief. CARE suggests the additional revenue should fund gambling addiction treatment and research.

Additionally, Ansell praised the initiative to extend parental pay to qualified self-employed fathers, partners, and adopters starting in April 2029.
