Recent developments in the UK have sparked a renewed debate on the policies surrounding single-sex spaces, as Christian Concern and its legal branch, The Christian Legal Centre (CLC), take action to address these issues. Their latest campaign involves a petition urging the government to reinforce regulations ensuring that facilities like changing rooms are exclusive to a single sex.

The case of Jennifer Melle, a nurse who faced a protracted disciplinary process, has attracted significant attention. Melle encountered difficulties following a dispute with a transgender patient, who was also a convicted paedophile and prisoner. The situation escalated when Melle referred to the patient as “Mr” and was subjected to threats and racial abuse, being called a derogatory term. In January, the proceedings against her were halted, and she was reinstated.

Similarly, the Darlington Nurses case highlighted tensions involving a transgender nurse. Female staff members raised concerns about sharing their changing space with a biological male, only to be told to adopt a more inclusive attitude. The transgender nurse reportedly offered to educate them on the matter, which led to the hospital providing the female nurses with an alternative, though subpar, space.

In an effort to bring international attention to these issues, Bethany Hutchison, representing the nurses, traveled to the United States to discuss the case and the broader implications for freedom of speech in the UK.

Christian Concern, in its petition addressed to Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Women and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson, emphasized the need for action. They stated, “He [Streeting] promised in April last year that new policy would be rolled out ‘within weeks’ but so far has failed to act.”

The petition calls upon individuals to support the cause, aiming to “ensure that no woman is forced to change in the presence of a man”.

The document highlights that many public institutions, particularly within the NHS, have not adhered to last year’s Supreme Court decision that single-sex spaces should remain exclusive to one sex.

The petition stresses, “Recent legal cases, including their Employment Tribunal victory, have made it clear that women’s changing spaces are supposed to be for females only.

“But policies at workplaces around the country, particularly in the NHS, are still forcing women to share these personal spaces with biological men.”

The petition is scheduled for delivery on 11 February.
