ICE’s Actions Spark Controversy Amid Rising Disapproval of Trump
As tensions rise following two fatal incidents involving federal immigration agents in Minnesota, public sentiment towards Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and President Trump is shifting. Recent data from the NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals that 65% of Americans believe ICE has overstepped its bounds, marking an 11-point increase since last summer. This growing dissatisfaction is particularly noted among independents and Democrats.
President Trump is experiencing a surge in disapproval, reaching levels unseen since the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol attack. His overall approval rating sits at 39%, with 56% disapproving and 51% expressing strong disapproval. Lee Miringoff, from the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, highlights a shift among Trump’s voting coalition, including younger voters, Latinos, and independents, who are now distancing themselves from him.
Public Opinion on ICE and Trump’s Policies
Despite Trump’s steadfast base, which continues to support him on various policies, a significant portion of the public disapproves of ICE’s conduct and Trump’s handling of several key issues. Almost 7 in 10 Republicans still support the idea of the U.S. taking control of Greenland, a stance opposed by most independents and Democrats.
Following the Minnesota incidents, Greg Bovino was reassigned, and White House border czar Tom Homan announced a reduction of 700 federal agents in the state. In an interview with NBC News, Trump acknowledged, “I learned that maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch. But you still have to be tough. These are criminals. You’re dealing with really hard criminals.”
Public sentiment reflects dissatisfaction with ICE’s operations, as two-thirds of Americans feel the agency has gone too far. Additionally, a majority believe ICE makes Americans less safe, with 59% viewing protests against ICE as legitimate.
Trump’s Waning Support Among Key Voter Groups
Trump’s approval ratings have dipped below 40% since November, with significant disapproval regarding his economic and foreign policy decisions. The poll indicates that 56% disapprove of his economic policies, particularly tariffs, which many believe harm the economy.
On foreign policy, 66% oppose acquiring Greenland, and a majority emphasize the importance of consulting Congress before military actions. Despite these figures, Trump’s core supporters remain loyal, with high approval ratings across various policy areas.
Independent voters, once a crucial part of Trump’s coalition, now mirror Democrats’ disapproval, with only 30% approving of his job performance. Latinos, another key demographic, show similar trends, with 60% disapproving of his economic management and widespread belief that ICE has gone too far.
