When a baby moose found itself trapped on a highway median, separated from its mother by a concrete barrier it couldn’t climb, two compassionate individuals stepped in to bridge the gap. The heartwarming rescue, captured on video, shows what can happen when people choose to pause and help a creature in distress.
The incident unfolded on Highway 97 near Prince George in British Columbia, where a mother moose was attempting to cross the busy road with her newborn twin calves. While the mother successfully navigated across the highway with one of her babies, the second calf became stranded on the median strip, unable to scale the concrete barrier that separated it from its family.
A mother’s desperate attempt
The mother moose, aware that one of her calves was missing, returned to the barrier in an effort to help her stranded baby. Despite her attempts, the physical obstacle proved insurmountable for both the anxious mother and her frightened calf, which could only pace helplessly along the median.
As the situation continued, traffic began to accumulate on the highway. While many drivers waited in their vehicles, ready to resume their journeys, Duane Hogberg made a different choice. He exited his vehicle and approached the stranded calf.
Two strangers unite for a rescue
Hogberg carefully lifted the small moose calf over the concrete barrier, transporting it to the opposite side of the highway where its mother waited. He wasn’t alone in his efforts—another bystander joined the rescue operation, and together they successfully reunited the baby moose with its mother and sibling.
The entire rescue was documented on video by a witness, preserving a moment that demonstrates the impact of choosing compassion over convenience. The footage shows the delicate operation of moving the young animal to safety while its mother stood nearby.
This act of kindness on a busy highway serves as a reminder that helping those in need, whether human or animal, often requires us to look beyond our own immediate concerns and recognize when intervention can make a life-changing difference.
