A 16-year-old Christian boy in Cuba, Jonathan Muir Burgos, is reportedly being held in jail without access to medical treatment. This situation is allegedly a tactic by the Cuban authorities to exert pressure on his parents, who lead an unregistered evangelical church.

Jonathan was detained alongside his father, Pastor Elier Muir Ávila, following their participation in anti-government demonstrations in March. Although Pastor Elier was released after questioning, his son remains in custody.

Open Doors, an organization advocating for persecuted Christians, claims that the Cuban government considers the family “ideologically dangerous.” Over the past decade, the family has reportedly experienced repeated detentions, death threats, and psychological harassment.

Their church has faced significant challenges, including the departure of 60 members as a result of state pressure. The authorities have refused to legally recognize the church and appear to maintain surveillance over its activities.

Jonathan’s health is a growing concern due to a skin condition known as dyshidrosis, which requires ongoing treatment to prevent severe infections. Since his detention, he has reportedly been deprived of necessary medication, and prison conditions, exacerbated by a bedbug infestation, have worsened his health.

An anonymous advocacy leader from Open Doors commented, “This case reflects the restrictions on religious freedom and punishment for peaceful protests that Cuban citizens face … Jonathan’s case demands a clear response.”

Open Doors has urged for Jonathan’s immediate release, appropriate medical treatment, and transparency regarding any legal charges against him.

A spokesperson from Open Doors emphasized, “The situation calls for solidarity and for the defence of human dignity, especially for those who are most vulnerable. As the Body of Christ, we cannot remain indifferent to the situation of one of our members, particularly when it involves a minor.”
