Baseball legend Darryl Strawberry’s career glittered with championship rings and record-breaking home runs, but his personal life was crumbling under the weight of addiction, legal troubles, and life-threatening illnesses. The transformation that followed would take him from the baseball diamond to the pulpit, where he now spends most of his year sharing a message of hope.
The eight-time All-Star is releasing a new book that chronicles his remarkable journey from sports superstar to ordained minister, detailing how faith became his path to healing after years of struggle.
From number one draft pick to baseball royalty
Born in Los Angeles on March 12, 1962, Strawberry grew up in a difficult household marked by an abusive father. Baseball became his refuge from the turmoil at home, and his natural talent on the field was undeniable.
The New York Mets selected him as their first overall pick in 1980. Just three years later, he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1983. His career flourished as he claimed eight All-Star selections and celebrated four World Series championships. His home run record for the Mets remained unbroken for nearly four decades.
When success couldn’t silence the struggle
The spotlight that came with baseball stardom also brought destructive temptations. Strawberry battled intense drug dependencies that ravaged his relationships, leading to multiple failed marriages. His legal troubles culminated in an eleven-month incarceration in Florida.
His health challenges proved equally daunting. He confronted colon cancer in 1998, later faced kidney cancer, and survived a severe heart attack. Throughout these trials, he credits his mother Ruby’s faith with planting seeds that would eventually take root in his own life.
A new calling beyond the outfield
After surrendering to Christ, Strawberry became an ordained minister and established Strawberry Ministries alongside his wife Tracy. He now dedicates 270 days annually to traveling with his son Jordan, delivering his message at churches, educational institutions, correctional facilities, and medical centers across the country.
“I found out that real freedom doesn’t come from trying harder, but from letting go,” Strawberry said. “Grace met me in the middle of my mess, not after I cleaned it up. My life didn’t change overnight, but my direction did when I gave it to God.”
