Football Star Erling Haaland Funds Historic Manuscript Donation to Local Library

In a gesture that bridges sports and history, renowned footballer Erling Haaland has used his wealth to contribute to cultural preservation. The Norwegian player, alongside his father, has purchased a significant Christian manuscript and donated it to their hometown library.

Haaland, in collaboration with his father Alf-Inge Haaland, spent $134,000 to acquire the Heimskringla, a notable collection of Viking sagas dating back to the late 16th century, as reported by EWTN.

The Heimskringla offers insights into medieval Norse society and narrates the spread of Christianity within Norway, capturing the lives of various societal segments during that era.

Erling Haaland, celebrated for his outstanding performances in football, led the Premier League in goals during the 2025/26 season and ranked fourth in personal goals at the recent World Cup.

The manuscript, believed to have been created in 1594, is thought to be a reproduction of an earlier 13th-century document by an Icelandic scholar. It recounts the tale of King Olaf Haraldsson, a pivotal figure in Norwegian history who embraced Christianity and was later canonized by the Catholic Church, symbolizing national and spiritual identity.

The Haalands have generously donated this manuscript to the public library in Bryne, their hometown, allowing local residents to connect with their historical roots.

Expressing his sentiments to Norwegian media, Erling Haaland stated, “I want the book always to lie open so that people can read about those who came from where I come from, from Bryne and Jæren.”

He further remarked, “I’ve been lucky enough to live out my dream through football, and I know not everyone gets that chance. Books give so many more people the chance to dream big, see new possibilities and find their own path.”
