Outside St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh, Enoch Burke confronted Archbishop John McDowell, accusing him of inaction during Burke’s imprisonment linked to a disagreement with Wilson’s Hospital School. Burke, who has spent over 700 days in jail, questioned the Archbishop’s silence and accused him of betraying Church of Ireland principles.

Police are currently investigating a claim of an assault on clergy at the cathedral during the encounter. Archbishop McDowell, a patron of Wilson’s Hospital School, was accused by Burke of neglecting his duty to uphold Christian teachings on gender, demanding, “Why are you silent?”

Video evidence shows the Archbishop indicating he would call law enforcement before he retreated to his residence, See House, with the cathedral’s dean, leaving Burke’s questions unanswered.

The origins of the conflict trace back to 2022 when Burke refused a request from the school to use a transgender student’s chosen name and pronouns. Following a confrontation at a religious service, Burke was suspended but continued to attend the school, leading to legal proceedings and his repeated imprisonment for violating court orders.

In an X post from October, Burke detailed that his total time in prison amounted to 728 days. The Church of Ireland confirmed the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is investigating the incident with the Archbishop.

A Church of Ireland spokesperson expressed concern over the timing and nature of Burke’s confrontation, which occurred during a funeral service at the cathedral. The spokesperson emphasized the sanctity of the occasion and noted the intrusion onto private property.

The Church has refrained from further comments pending the police investigation. Meanwhile, Graham Linehan, a comedy writer and campaigner, showed understanding towards Burke’s frustrations, though he expressed concern over Burke’s methods.

The Church’s stance has stirred varied reactions. Nick Park from Evangelical Alliance Ireland critiqued Burke’s behavior despite supporting the expression of biblical views.

Recently, the High Court refined an arrest order against Burke, now restricting it to instances where he is within 100 meters of Wilson’s Hospital School. The court also addressed outstanding fines of €238,268.18 against Burke for violating an injunction, requiring him to disclose financial information within three weeks, according to RTÉ.

The PSNI confirmed ongoing investigations into the reported assault at St Patrick’s Cathedral, stating, “Police enquiries are ongoing.”
