When Joshua Threatt was driving through Detroit’s west side one freezing morning, he spotted something that immediately alarmed him as a father. A 6-year-old girl was walking completely alone in the bitter cold, without a hat, gloves, or boots to protect her from the harsh weather.
The 36-year-old father couldn’t drive past without taking action. With a child the same age at home, Threatt understood the gravity of the situation and knew he needed to intervene.
Walking 10 blocks in the cold
Rather than simply offering the child a ride in his truck, Threatt made a deliberate choice to handle the situation properly. He exited his vehicle and walked alongside the young girl for 10 blocks all the way to Thirkell Elementary School. To document his intentions and ensure transparency, he recorded the entire walk on Facebook Live.
“If I was cold, I definitely know she was cold. She had to be freezing no doubt,” Joshua said.
During the recorded walk, Threatt’s concern was evident. “She was out here walking by herself. How old are you? Six? Man,” he said in the video, his voice reflecting both worry and compassion.
A father’s perspective
The situation resonated deeply with Threatt because of his own family. “I actually thought about my youngest because my youngest is the same age and I was like this shouldn’t be, like somebody needs to be with her,” he explained.
Throughout the lengthy walk, Threatt considered how frightening the experience must have been for the child. “She’s probably scared because she’s been walking for about 10 blocks. She’s probably scared. So many people just pulled up on that little girl. I am so happy I saved her. I am so happy I saved her,” Joshua said, his voice becoming emotional.
Ensuring the child’s safety
Upon arriving at the school, Threatt provided detailed information to staff members about finding the child and the distance she had traveled alone. His video documenting the incident subsequently reached tens of thousands of viewers online.
Following the video’s widespread circulation, Threatt had a conversation with the girl’s father. “We had a good, nice man-to-man talk,” he said, wanting to ensure the child’s future safety.
Detroit police conducted an investigation and discovered this was not an isolated incident—the child had been found walking alone previously. Children’s Protective Services received notification about the case, and authorities are now monitoring the situation.
A message to all parents
Threatt shared a straightforward but crucial message for parents everywhere: “You need to make sure the kid’s safety is first and foremost above anything,” he said.
His actions that cold morning demonstrated the impact one person can have when they choose to act rather than assume someone else will help. By walking step by step with a vulnerable child until she reached safety, Threatt showed what true community care looks like.
