As the holiday season approaches, the familiar sights and sounds begin to fill the air. But have you ever stopped to ponder what truly epitomizes the essence of Christmas?

Is it the twinkling lights adorning every corner, the festive tunes playing in every store, or the shopping frenzy that marks the season? These are cherished traditions, yet they often overshadow the deeper meaning of Christmas.

Unveiling the Heart of Christmas

At the core of Christmas lies a profound message: the celebration of Jesus Christ. The term ‘Christmas’ itself is derived from ‘Christ’s Mass,’ indicating a service to honor the birth of Christ. This period urges a reflection on the Messiah’s arrival into the world.

However, the repetition of the story can sometimes dull its impact. The hustle and bustle of the season may divert our attention. Hence, it is crucial to revisit what makes Christmas remarkable.

Jesus: The Divine Gift

Humanity’s separation from God began with the sin of Adam and Eve (Romans 5:12). Each subsequent generation has inherited this brokenness (Romans 3:23). Despite this, God, in His infinite mercy, provided the Law as a guide back to Him—yet our sinful nature made it impossible to adhere perfectly (Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7). Rather than offering salvation, the Law underscored our need for a Savior (Galatians 3:10; Galatians 3:24; Galatians 2:16).

God did not abandon His creation. He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16). The reunion with God, unattainable by human effort, was graciously given through Jesus. God became flesh (John 1:1-2; Matthew 1:23), not waiting for humanity to ascend to Him but descending to us: born humbly, living among us, and ultimately sacrificing His life (Philippians 2:6-8; Romans 5:8; John 1:14; Luke 2:7; Luke 19:10).

With Jesus’ arrival, everything transformed. He brought light into the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5). Those once lost are now found (Luke 15:32); former adversaries are now beloved children (Romans 5:10); what was once death and condemnation is now eternal life through salvation (Ephesians 2:1-5; Ephesians 6:23).

God’s sole request is that we accept this gift through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Remembering the True Meaning

As you immerse yourself in the holiday activities—gift wrapping, meal preparations, and decorating—remember that Christmas without Jesus loses its essence. It is a joyous celebration of God with us (Matthew 1:23), a testament to God’s love and His invitation to a relationship with Him.

“Joy to the world—the Lord is come!” May this be the song in your heart this festive season.
