When Casey Pettus left his Utah home last Wednesday morning to bid on a construction job, he had no idea he was about to experience a lightning strike that would engulf his truck in flames on the highway. But the most powerful moment of that day wouldn’t come from the dramatic incident itself—it would arrive hours later in the form of a small hand holding crumpled bills.
The contractor was navigating his truck through a rainstorm when he noticed his rear tire was losing air. Hoping to reach a tire shop before the situation worsened, he pressed on. Then nature intervened in spectacular fashion.
A flash of light and instant chaos
“It didn’t feel like I hit anything, but just like my whole truck got hit and then, you know, a big flash of light,” Pettus explained to KSL News. The sensation, he recalled, was like intense pressure bearing down from above. A second or two passed before he could even process what had occurred.
The lightning strike immediately disabled his power steering, forcing him to wrestle with the wheel while maneuvering through heavy rain to reach the roadside. Smoke began billowing from the dashboard almost instantly. Within just five minutes, the entire vehicle was consumed by flames.
The incident destroyed thousands of dollars in tools essential to his contracting work. Still, Pettus emerged physically unharmed—a fact that Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Justin Faust noted was remarkable. According to Faust, he’d only witnessed a lightning strike hit a vehicle in this manner once before during his entire law enforcement career.
A son’s unexpected sacrifice
That evening, as Pettus sat with his family on their deck trying to decompress from the day’s events, his 9-year-old son approached with something in his hand. The boy had been running a small business collecting trash cans for neighbors, carefully saving every dollar earned toward purchasing a dirt bike he desperately wanted.
Without prompting, the child extended a handful of cash toward his father—his entire savings—wanting him to use it to replace the lost tools.
“I was so touched,” Pettus said, emotion evident in his voice. “He’s like, ‘Here, dad. You could have this to replace your tools,’ and I just, in that moment, I’d never felt so loved.”
Pettus declined the money, reassuring his son that insurance would handle the replacement costs. However, the gesture itself proved unforgettable—a testament to the values being learned and practiced within their household.
