Controversy Surrounds President Trump’s Proposed Military Complex in Washington, D.C.
Plans are underway for a monumental addition to the Washington, D.C. skyline. President Donald Trump has announced the conversion of a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch into a military complex. The structure, set to be positioned between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, aims to bolster national security, according to the president.
In a Truth Social post, Trump elaborated, “At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch… into a top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch.” The arch is envisioned to feature sniper positions and a substantial arsenal of weaponry, including drones and sniper ammunition.

The administration’s plan has sparked significant opposition, as the arch would rise to twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial. More than 100,000 public comments have been submitted to the National Park Service, expressing concerns about the project. Legal challenges have also emerged, with a lawsuit filed by a group of Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian. The plaintiffs argue that the arch would desecrate Arlington National Cemetery and that Congressional approval is required for construction.
U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan has intervened, mandating the government to provide 48 hours’ notice before any work begins at Memorial Circle. The judge’s order followed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s announcement on X that construction would commence within two weeks, pending final approvals.
Meanwhile, Trump’s other construction projects in Washington have faced similar scrutiny. A controversial White House ballroom, alleged to house a military complex beneath it, has been allowed to proceed following a U.S. Supreme Court decision in August.
Despite the hurdles, Trump remains resolute in his vision for the arch, declaring on Truth Social: “There will be no facility like this anywhere in the World. Out of the 59 top cities and Capitals, Washington, D.C., IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD THAT DOES NOT HAVE A TRIUMPHAL ARCH, but it will now and, by far, the greatest of them all!”
