Richard Rogers’ life took a dramatic turn in 1995 when a bolt of lightning transformed him from a man going about his daily life into someone with a profound mission. The near-death experience didn’t just leave physical scars—it ignited a spiritual calling that would reshape his entire existence.
The incident occurred at a hunting cabin, where Rogers was struck by lightning with such force that it literally set him ablaze and caused his heart to stop beating. The impact was devastating: the skin on his chest burned away completely, and his hair was singed from the electrical current coursing through his body.
“I didn’t wake up. I was dead,” Rogers remembered. His life hung in the balance until a young person at the scene administered CPR, successfully reviving him and providing him with an unexpected second chance.
A glimpse beyond
While clinically dead, Rogers experienced something extraordinary. “It was very calm too. I was going through this bright tunnel and it was really cool,” he described of his out-of-body experience. This peaceful moment contrasted sharply with the medical battle that awaited him at a burn center in Chattanooga.
A pivotal moment came when his son asked whether he would survive. Rogers recalled that when his son questioned if he was going to die, it was a turning point. “I sat up in the bed and I prayed. And my prayer was, ‘If you will let me live, I don’t wanna live for me. I wanna live for others that I can help,'” he expressed.
Defying medical expectations
The road to recovery presented enormous challenges. Medical professionals painted a grim picture of his future mobility, but Rogers refused to accept their prognosis. “The doctors told me I would never walk again and so I proved them wrong too,” Rogers said with conviction. Through determination and faith, he overcame the impairments caused by the lightning strike.
His resilience extended beyond personal recovery. Together with his brother, Rogers took control of U.S. Stove Company, a failing business they had inherited from their deceased father. The brothers successfully revitalized the struggling company, demonstrating the same perseverance Rogers had shown in his physical recovery.
Living out a promise
Now serving as Chairman of the Board, Rogers has dedicated himself to fulfilling the vow he made during his darkest hour. His philanthropic efforts include The Launch Pad in Chattanooga, an initiative that offers housing and supportive community for women struggling with drug addiction.
Rogers’ commitment to helping others reflects his belief that his survival came with a purpose. By dedicating his post-recovery life to serving his community and supporting those in need, he has transformed a tragic event into an opportunity to make a lasting positive impact.
“Blessed are those who persevere under trial, because when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” – James 1:12
