Heightened Tensions as Saudi Arabia Intercepts Houthi Missile Attack
In a series of escalating moves, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have launched an attempted missile strike on Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. This marks the first such attempt since fighting intensified with the Iran-supported group, introducing a new layer of complexity to the ongoing regional conflict.
The Saudi-led coalition, engaged in battle with the Houthis, confirmed the dawn interception of the missile. Residents in Riyadh reported hearing an explosion, and a plume of smoke was visible near the airport, though no casualties or damage were reported.
Additional attacks were reportedly thwarted in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu, Taif, Baysh, and Farasan, targeting civilian infrastructure according to coalition statements. The Houthis, meanwhile, claimed without evidence to have hit “sensitive sites” in Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu, alleging “massive fires” ensued. Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, has not commented on these claims.
The heightened conflict near crucial global shipping lanes has begun to affect market pressures. Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree announced the use of cruise and ballistic missiles alongside drones in their attacks. He also accused Saudi Arabia of targeting Sanaa, the rebel-held city in Yemen, though these claims remain unverified by independent sources.
Recent incidents underscore the growing tensions. A Yemeni resident in Saudi Arabia became the first civilian casualty on Thursday when debris from an intercepted Houthi drone struck. The day prior, Saudi Arabia accused the Houthis of attempting a drone attack on Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, which the rebels denied, emphasizing the city’s security as a “red line.”
Despite the turmoil, the United States, a crucial Saudi ally, has conveyed a neutral stance regarding the Houthis. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, facing a shortage of missile interceptors, has sought air defense assistance from France, Britain, Pakistan, and Egypt.
Within Yemen, clashes have intensified between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed government. The rebels have recently advanced along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, capturing the strategic port city of Mokha and islands near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, enhancing their surveillance capabilities over passing vessels. The Houthis maintain that their focus is solely on Saudi targets.
This escalation marks a return to fierce civil warfare in Yemen after a period of relative peace spanning four years.
