Amidst vibrant Christmas celebrations across many regions of India, there are troubling reports of hostility and violence aimed at Christians, particularly in northern and central parts of the country. This duality has captured the attention of both national and international observers, highlighting the complex dynamics faced by the Christian community.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in a Christmas service at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption in New Delhi on December 25, 2025, was a notable gesture of inclusivity. However, it contrasts sharply with the disturbing incidents of persecution and assault against Christians reported in several states. Allegations have surfaced accusing local police of either failing to act or being complicit in these events.

Incidents of Intolerance

Notable incidents include a disruption in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, where BJP leader Anju Bhargava, along with her supporters, allegedly interrupted a Christian event for the visually and hearing impaired. A widely circulated video captured her allegedly assaulting a visually impaired woman while making derogatory remarks about her disability being a consequence of her faith. This act was met with widespread condemnation, though significant denouncement from the state BJP was lacking.

In another incident in Madhya Pradesh, right-wing groups reportedly invaded church prayer meetings, chanting Hindu slogans and taking over the services with their religious chants, thereby humiliating the worshippers.

Meanwhile, in Chhattisgarh, a mob vandalized Christmas decorations at Raipur’s Magneto Mall on December 24, 2025, during a statewide protest by Hindu organizations against alleged conversions. Despite the police registering cases, the perpetrators remain unidentified.

Similar incidents were reported in Odisha, where street vendors selling Christmas merchandise were harassed and forced to cease their activities, with attackers accusing them of promoting conversions and proclaiming India as a “Hindu Rashtra.”

Reflections on Faith and Resilience

Despite these adversities, the resilience of the Christian community remains strong. There is a belief that those who suffer for their faith will ultimately triumph. As one commentator reflected, “Empires like Rome under Nero and Caesar fell; regimes like Hitler’s Third Reich, Idi Amin’s, and Stalin’s collapsed. So too will those perpetrating evil face accountability.”

The enduring message of Christmas emphasizes joy, peace, and the eventual triumph of justice over wickedness. Amid the false narratives of forced conversions, many in India continue to find solace and transformation in the teachings of Jesus, drawn by His message of love and power.
