In an effort to safeguard the nation’s cultural legacy, the National Lottery Heritage Fund has pledged a substantial investment exceeding £1.4 billion in various heritage initiatives nationwide.
This investment is part of a strategic delivery plan spanning from 2026 to 2029, which seeks to allocate approximately £130 million to support places of worship, historic ships, and museum collections. Additionally, around £20 million is earmarked for projects aimed at engaging youth with heritage.
The initiative aims to revitalize heritage assets, fostering their productive use while enhancing the resilience and financial sustainability of heritage organizations to better tackle future challenges.
Addressing environmental concerns is also a key component, with efforts to enhance awareness of climate risks and mitigation strategies. Historic structures, such as York Minster, illustrate the vulnerability to climate-related impacts.
Recently, York Minster appealed for financial aid to repair its iconic Rose Window. A 2025 survey revealed that increased ultraviolet and infrared radiation, coupled with heightened moisture levels, are deteriorating the glass’s surface and the surrounding stonework.
Alongside the current delivery plan, the National Lottery Heritage Fund unveiled another plan extending to 2033, termed as an “ambitious 10-year vision for the UK’s heritage.”
Since its inception in 2023, the “Heritage 2033” initiative has facilitated the allocation of £885 million to over 1,750 projects throughout the UK.
Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, stated, “Our new delivery plan builds on the first three years of our Heritage 2033 strategy and responds to what we have heard from grant applicants and partners.
“Over the next three years, we will invest £1.4 billion in heritage projects that reflect the ambitions of communities and places across the UK.
“Our enhanced support for children and young people, alongside our commitment to backing innovative projects that create volunteering, employment and training opportunities, is made possible thanks to National Lottery players and the outstanding projects and partners we work with.”
