In a groundbreaking move merging faith and technology, a Californian pastor has introduced an AI-driven version of himself to assist his congregation. This innovation reflects the growing interest in integrating artificial intelligence into spiritual practices.
Pastor Justin Lester of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Vallejo has created what he calls an “AI digital doppelganger.” This virtual representation is designed to provide guidance and answer questions from church members around the clock, ensuring his presence is felt 24/7, even when he is unavailable in person.
Explaining the setup process to a local TV station, Pastor Lester stated, “I connected on YouTube, TikTok, my Instagram and everything I’ve ever written, so all the way back to every sermon I’ve ever preached. Books, all of that are in there. Every single day it evolves.”
This initiative is not happening in isolation. There are other significant projects aimed at helping the church engage with AI. One such project is the Church AI Toolkit, which provides ‘pastoral wisdom in the age of AI.’ It was developed by an ecumenical group under the TryTank Research Institute at Virginia Theological Seminary. The Toolkit offers resources and case studies to assist pastors in addressing AI-related challenges, providing guidance for dealing with emotions like grief, loneliness, and fear.
Another initiative is the AI Christian Partnership, a UK-based nonprofit comprising theologians, technologists, and academics. This organization emphasizes AI literacy among Christians, aiming to help them develop practical responses to AI’s implications in ministry and the workplace. They provide resources like the free ‘AI Guidelines for Christian Ministry’, crafted by the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion.
The AI Christian Partnership aims to tackle theological and ethical questions posed by AI, offering a platform for discussion and resource sharing among Christian organizations. They focus on questions such as: What is AI? How can it be used? What ethical considerations are involved?
While Pastor Lester’s AI initiative may seem unique, it highlights a broader trend of Christian communities and organizations proactively engaging with the rapid advancements in AI technology. These efforts reflect the church’s commitment to understanding and navigating the potential impacts of AI on society and spirituality.
