In a heartfelt appeal for peace, Pope Leo XIV centered his Christmas Day ‘Urbi et Orbi’ message around the urgent need for global harmony. The Pontiff called for prayers to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and to bring justice, peace, and stability to regions such as Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Syria.

Pope Leo emphasized the importance of cooperation and community spirit across Europe, noting, “Let us entrust the entire European continent to the Prince of Peace, asking him to continue to inspire a spirit of community and cooperation, in fidelity to its Christian roots and history, and in solidarity with – and acceptance of – those in need.”

The Pope’s address also highlighted the urgency of resolving the Ukrainian conflict, urging all parties involved to pursue “sincere, direct and respectful dialogue” with the support of the international community. “Let us pray in a particular way for the tormented people of Ukraine: may the clamor of weapons cease,” he said.

Addressing a wider audience, Pope Leo pointed to Jesus’ example of forgiveness as a pathway to resolving both personal and international conflicts. “He is the Saviour. With his grace, we can and must each do our part to reject hatred, violence and opposition, and to practise dialogue, peace and reconciliation,” he stated.

The message extended to victims of lesser-known conflicts and those suffering from injustice, political instability, and persecution. Countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, and regions like Latin America, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Gaza, Yemen, and South Asia, were mentioned as areas in need of peace and comfort.

In closing, Pope Leo encouraged collective action to aid those in distress, saying, “In the face of such trials, I invite everyone to renew, with heartfelt conviction, our shared commitment to assisting those who suffer.” He emphasized the importance of empathy, warning against indifference to human suffering, and reminding that “God is not indifferent to our distress.”
