When a woman found herself unable to breathe while behind the wheel in Ford Heights, Illinois, her quick decision to pull over and the fortunate presence of a nearby sheriff’s officer combined to prevent a potential tragedy. The dramatic rescue, captured on surveillance video, unfolded rapidly on Ellis Avenue last month.
The woman was operating her black SUV when she suddenly began choking and realized she had completely lost the ability to breathe. Acting swiftly despite her panic, she steered her vehicle onto the sidewalk and exited with her hand clutched to her chest, desperately seeking assistance from anyone nearby.
Officer responds immediately to emergency
Cook County Sheriff’s Officer Zachary Finn happened to be in the vicinity and observed the woman’s erratic parking maneuver. He immediately stopped his patrol vehicle to investigate. As the distressed woman approached him, attempting to communicate her inability to breathe, Officer Finn recognized the emergency situation and sprang into action.
Drawing on his training, Officer Finn administered the Heimlich maneuver to the choking victim. The abdominal thrusts successfully dislodged the obstruction from her airway, allowing her to breathe once more.
Woman declines additional medical care
Following the successful intervention, paramedics arrived at the scene to evaluate the woman’s condition. After their assessment, she declined further medical treatment, feeling sufficiently recovered from the incident. She expressed her gratitude to Officer Finn for his life-saving assistance before getting back into her vehicle and driving home.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office released the surveillance footage of the incident on their social media platforms. “Hats off to Officer Finn for his quick thinking and life-saving actions!” they wrote.
