When a medical emergency struck at an Oregon apartment complex, the person who sprang into action wasn’t an adult—it was a preschooler. The quick thinking of a 4-year-old girl has earned her recognition as a lifesaver after she helped rescue her grandmother from a potentially fatal situation.
Nova Hallett was at home with her 76-year-old grandmother Charlene and infant brother at the Arbor Creek Apartments in Beaverton on April 17 when disaster struck. Charlene suffered a severe fall that left her with a head injury, bleeding and disoriented, unable to call for assistance herself.
A child’s quick response in a crisis
Rather than panicking or freezing in fear, the young child took immediate action. Nova left the apartment and located a neighbor, clearly communicating that her grandmother needed help. The neighbor immediately contacted emergency services.
When Beaverton Police officers arrived on the scene, Nova personally escorted them to the apartment. The unlocked door allowed first responders to quickly access Charlene and provide urgent medical care. Emergency medical personnel transported the injured woman to a nearby hospital, where she received treatment for approximately one week before being discharged.
Mother witnesses emergency remotely
Nova’s mother, Hayley Rose, was away from home during the incident but received a notification from her Ring doorbell camera. Initially alarmed, she began driving home immediately while monitoring the unfolding situation through the video feed.
“As I was driving, and I could see her communicating with them and just hearing her talk made me calmer,” Rose said.
Upon arriving home, an officer informed Rose of the situation: “Your daughter did a great thing getting help. Your mom fell and busted her head.”
Rose expressed amazement at her daughter’s capability: “What 4-year-old knows how to do that?”
Recognition for remarkable composure
When Rose explained to Nova that her grandmother was receiving medical care at the hospital, the child’s response reflected her understanding of the situation. “She said, ‘OK, I saved Grandma!’ and she felt really, really proud,” Rose recalled.
The Beaverton Police Department expressed admiration for the child’s exceptional behavior during the emergency. Public Information Officer Matt Henderson stated that “Nova demonstrated an incredible level of bravery and awareness, especially for someone so young.”
Henderson noted that Nova’s ability to recognize the emergency and successfully direct officers to her grandmother contributed significantly to the positive outcome. The police department intends to nominate the young girl for a community life-saving award.
A special bond between generations
According to Rose, Nova and Charlene share an exceptionally close relationship. “They’re two peas in a pod to be honest. She’s like literally my mom’s right-hand girl,” Rose said, explaining that the pair are nearly inseparable.
This deep connection between grandmother and granddaughter likely played a role in Nova’s decisive response. Her instinctive reaction to protect someone she loves demonstrated remarkable maturity beyond her years.
