Roman Butzlaff, a young resident of Concord, North Carolina, has an infectious enthusiasm for connecting with people. Each morning, his first priority is greeting passersby with a wave and a friendly “hey.” According to his mother, Anna Butzlaff, who spoke with CBS News, “He wakes up every day excited to say ‘hi’ to somebody, like, that’s the first thing he wants to do.”
A child facing quiet struggles
Behind Roman’s cheerful demeanor lay a difficult reality. Approximately a year ago, his family experienced a separation, with his father relocating to Florida while his grandparents also lived at a distance. Despite his outwardly sunny disposition, the young boy was experiencing loneliness.
The turning point came when Wade Fulgum, a neighbor who regularly received Roman’s enthusiastic greetings, decided to introduce himself properly. This initial connection sparked regular interactions between the two, which soon caught the attention of other residents on their street.
A neighborhood transformed
What started with one neighbor soon expanded to include many others. Some stopped by for conversations, while others participated in playful activities like impromptu drag races down the street. Anna Butzlaff admitted the growing attention initially felt unusual. “I didn’t really know how to take it. I just saw that my son was happy,” she said.
The relationship between Roman and his senior citizen neighbors deepened as he began extending invitations to various activities in his life. These new friends attended his soccer matches, basketball games, baseball games, and swimming lessons. They even appeared at his preschool open house, demonstrating their commitment to being part of his life.
When Roman’s birthday arrived, his mother knew exactly which guests would mean the most to him. The senior neighbors who had become such important figures in his life were invited and attended. “He loves having us there, and he’ll run up and hug us,” one neighbor shared. Another added, “They’ve made such an impact on him. They are really special people to him.”
The impact of these relationships is visible throughout Roman’s home, where his refrigerator displays photographs of all his neighbor friends. According to his mother, the loneliness that once troubled him has completely dissipated.
